Heat Warning Issued for PEI May Impact Soccer Programming
Temperatures with humidex at 40 degrees celsius or higher, are considered dangerous for children. This is based on guidelines assembled by Canada Soccer, our national governing body. PEI Soccer may choose to cancel at a slightly lower humidex.
Notification of Cancelled Programs
If it is a game, PEI Soccer will make that call and inform team staff who will then inform their team participants. If it is practice, the responsibility lies with the team staff to inform their team members of their plan. The Club recommends that all teams adhere to the following guideline for heat:
Cancel if the temperature with humidex is predicted to be or does reach 40 degrees celsius or higher
Guidelines for Playing in the Heat
Parents should:
- Ensure your child is hydrated before attending the session (How do you know if they are hydrated? They should really need to pee and that pee should be plentiful and have little or no colour)
- Bring extra water or a sport drink (like Gatorade or Powerade which has the added benefit of electrolyte replacement lost in sweat) for your child
- Dress your child in light coloured, light weight and loose-fitting closes
- Monitor your child for signs & symptoms of a heat-related condition (see below)
Team Staff should:
- Have extra water available
- Reduce the intensity of activities as needed
- Have more water breaks/cooling periods

If your child's program is not cancelled and you are concerned about their safety, you do not have to attend. The choice is always yours.
