What are the certification requirements for team staff?
Canada Soccer and the PEI Soccer Association want all clubs to have certified bench staff working with the players. And this certification is required for anyone working with players from U5 up to U18.

The Club will reimburse you for any certifications you have to pay up front as long as you show proof of completion.
An open roster is a way to enhance player development. Normally, once a player is selected to a team they do not move from that team. The roster is set or fixed. Open rosters allow for players to move freely between teams. Players can change a great deal in the weeks following tryouts. The players that didn’t look as strong in tryouts may all of a sudden show noticeable gains in performance. The player development benefit of open rosters comes in aiding players in playing at a competitive level that best suits their current ability.
How will my child develop teamwork skills or learn to gel with teammates if those teammates are always changing?
While the PEI Soccer Association does not require rosters to be fixed until July 31st of the year, our Club would only maintain open rosters until June 30th of the year. We feel this is a good compromise in order to give players more opportunity to find the appropriate competitive level for them while also giving them time to build a team culture. Regardless of the make-up of their teammates, a player will always be developing skills in teamwork.
With open rosters, the opportunity to have all players in the age group practice together exists. These age group training sessions are called squad sessions. All coaches and players from the age group would attend the squad session. The format would be stations. Players would be divided into groups for the session and would go through the stations, which would be run by the coaches. The Technical Director would design the squad sessions and Age Group Head Coaches would oversee their delivery. There would be one squad training session per week throughout the season. Green Division teams would then also have one required team practice a week. There would also be the opportunity for White Division teams to have a second team-based practice session per week, however, this would be advertised to parents as optional.
What is an Age Group Head Coach?
The Age Group Head Coach (AGHC) is the individual with the oversight of all the players within the entire player pool. The AGHC will also be the team head coach for one of the teams in the player pool. The AGHC leads the delivery of the weekly squad session for their player pool. They are the liaison between the age group and the Club’s player development standards for that age group. Individuals selected as AGHC’s have more soccer coaching and playing experience than the other team head and assistant coaches in the age group.
How do assessments differ from tryouts?
Tryouts are used to select players who are then permanently placed on a team. With open rosters, there is no need for tryouts in the spring. Players will go through a larger number of pre-season sessions to assess their overall ability level. The data collected will still be used to make an initial sort of players into ability-based groups but the players’ progress will determine their final roster placement come June 30th. This extra 4-6 weeks gives players more chances to show their abilities and coaches more chances to see those abilities.
